David obtained his LLB summa cum laude from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban in 2005. David joined Cox Yeats in 2013 and was appointed a partner in 2014. David was previously employed at an international law firm headquartered in London. He specialises in Insurance Litigation and Construction, Engineering and Infrastructure Law. David’s experience in insurance litigation includes public liability claims, professional indemnity claims and construction industry related claims (Third Party Property Damage/ Loss od Support/ Collapses/ Deaths on Site and Department of Labour Inquiries /PAR/CAR/ fire/ Contractual Claims). David also provides claims teams with input regarding policy response to claims made and assists with the drafting of representations to internal claims arbitrators and the Ombud. David advises clients on the drafting of and enforcement of building industry specific contracts. He is experienced in negotiation and drafting of JBCC, NEC3, GCC and FIDIC agreements. David has vast experience in Occupational Health and Safety in the built environment and has been involved in Collapse inquiries such as Tongaat Mall and the Grayston Drive bridge collapse. Laura Kelly
Laura is a partner at Cox Yeats where she focuses on International Trade, Energy, Insurance and Business Law. Her practice includes litigious work, acting for entities in our lower and supreme courts, but is focused primarily on commercial and contractual work and the provision of general in-house legal counsel services. Laura provides professional support and advice to numerous large organisations operating within South Africa and abroad. Her International Trade Law practice consists primarily of assisting logistics companies with the drafting, negotiation, and interpretation of industry specific agreements, such as warehousing, supply, transport/carriage, stevedoring and general trading terms and conditions. Within the energy law field, she has a particular focus on petroleum law and has advised on numerous complex and high-value petroleum storage and handling contracts with most of South Africa’s oil majors as well as wholesalers. She also assists clients with their engagements with stakeholders and regulatory authorities such as Transnet, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa and the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs. Laura’s insurance practice focuses on general insurance work, where she assists and advises a number of insurers in respect of policy responses, policy defences and complex indemnity claims and recoveries.
