Melissa Stear Gorsline is a Partner at Jones Day in the United States. She has been counsel in some of the earliest investor-State arbitrations in ICSID and UNCITRAL history, with a focus on public international law and international arbitration. She played an integral role in early NAFTA Chapter Eleven arbitrations and has handled numerous investment arbitrations, including those setting precedents on treaty succession, the 'illegality' defense, and the international law test for causation. She represents corporate clients and states in claims involving denial of justice, fair and equitable treatment, discrimination, expropriation, and umbrella clause violations, as well as jurisdictional objections and merits defenses. She also has experience in international commercial arbitration and litigation in U.S. courts.
