Stephen is an Associate in the Commercial team, having joined the firm in January 2023. Stephen advises clients on a broad range of commercial matters across Simkins’ portfolio of media and entertainment clients with a particular specialism in drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, advising on matters relating to digital, social media and content creation, the exploitation of intellectual property and image rights, and data protection matters. He also has a risk, regulatory and compliance background, and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional, Europe (CIPP/E). Stephen also has extensive in-house experience and was previously in-house counsel at the Com Laude Group, an international domain name management business. Outside of his work as a solicitor, Stephen is actively involved in the East and South-East Asian (ESEA) creative communities, having previously been a semi-professional dancer, and is a member of a variety of ESEA-based groups including ESEA Music, MilkTea Films, Bayanihan Circle and Occasians. Stephen is also a trustee of a music charity based in Brixton, South London called Grounded Sounds.

During his tenure as the CEO of a leading aerospace business, the company valuation increased from £6m to £100m, so he fully understands all the challenges and obstacles faced by growing businesses. Using this experience, Steve has a particular focus in working with start-up and other growth companies; businesses in the aerospace and defence sector; technology companies and China/UK business transactions. Steve also has significant non-contentious experience in the insurance and wider financial sector.

Stephen is an experienced corporate and commercial lawyer with a wide range of expertise across of number of jurisdictions. He has experience of advising borrowers on tax- and VAT-efficient offshore structures that hold UK-based real estate assets and expertise in advising lenders in relation to the financing of such offshore structures. In addition to providing commercial law advice to a wide range of businesses, Stephen also has extensive experience of advising IT, telecoms and e-gaming companies on technology-based commercial agreements and has previously worked as a telecommunications consultant with Andersen Consulting (now Accenture). His clients include an online card payment company that provides multi-currency bill payment services to online and traditional businesses. Stephen has multi-jurisdictional experience and connections having worked in London, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi and Dubai as well as Glasgow and the Isle of Man.

Stewart is a regulatory and commercial lawyer with a Master’s degree in International Law. He has decades of experience acting as a strategy, policy and regulatory adviser. His career has seen him work across jurisdictions in both developed and developing countries, advising the public and private sectors in fixed, mobile and satellite. In addition to his legal practice, Stewart has extensive board experience and has acted as a director at a number of companies including Vodafone and Etisalat. Stuart’s earlier career as a sound engineer gives him unique insight and understanding when advising his music industry clients.
