Matthew is highly experienced and specialises in a variety of corporate, commercial and tax matters that include, but are not limited to, company incorporations, corporate structing and restructurings, repatriation of profits/capital/reserves, equity and debt financing transactions, re-domiciliations in and out of Gibraltar, cross-border mergers, M&A, joint ventures, corporate finance and security, financial assistance, corporate governance and organisation, corporate transaction project management, insolvency work (in particular members’ voluntary solvent liquidations and advising liquidators – which he has advised in nearly 100 cases, many with cross-border aspects) and the use, set up, organisation and dissolutions of Gibraltar Limited Partnerships. Matthew also advises local small businesses on set-up and organisational related matters together with advising on trademark registrations in Gibraltar and more recently on crypto currency and blockchain related work. Matthew primarily advises large US and European multi-nationals, venture capital and private equity firms and family offices on a variety of international and transactional matters and is considered by these clients and their professional intermediaries (usually top legal and/or accounting US, UK and EU firms) as an efficient, trustworthy and responsive advisor. Meera Aswani
After graduating with a BA honours degree in English Literature from the University of Warwick in 2008, Meera completed the Graduate Diploma in Law in BPP law school, London and the Legal Practice Course in College of Law (now University of Law), London. In 2011, she began her training contract with Linklaters LLP, a magic circle law firm, completing seats in Banking, Litigation and Real Estate. She qualified as an associate into Linklaters Real Estate department and was admitted as a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales in April 2013. Moses joined Hassans in 1994 after qualification and spent two years with the firm returning to London in 1996 to join global law firm Baker & McKenzie specialising in advising on tax planning strategies for resident, non-resident and non-domiciled individuals and on inheritance and probate matters. Moshe Levy
Moshe has a busy litigation practice, involving a number of areas of law including Public Law and Criminal Law, and Landlord and Tenant/Property, commercial and trust disputes. He appears regularly in the Gibraltar Courts and tribunals on these matters as well as being instructed on commercial and trust advisory work. Moshe has also been very involved in Mutual Legal Assistance proceedings (which is an area of law rapidly growing in Gibraltar) appearing for Defendants in the Supreme Court in relation to production orders requested by EU Member States, and successfully challenging the grant of such orders. He has also advised on defamation, employment, bankruptcy and insolvency proceedings and on legislative drafting in relation to public law issues and has picked up invaluable knowledge in these areas. He combines technical knowledge and ability with an approachable manner to offer clients a well rounded service. Moshe came to law after achieving 1st class honours in a BSc which he converted into a law degree. Nicholas Howard
Nicholas is head of the firm’s busy and vibrant property department and has established himself as one of Gibraltar’s leading property lawyers. Nicholas’ practice area is predominantly in advising developers across all facets of large scale real estate developments from inception through to completion and he is currently the lead partner advising clients on six of Gibraltar’s biggest developments. In addition to this, Nicholas is also regularly instructed by banks on large property financing transactions. Nicholas has also recently advised the Government in respect to the property financing and conveyancing aspects of the single largest affordable housing scheme currently under construction in Gibraltar, to include the drafting of applicable legislation, as well as having advised Government on amendments to the Housing Act. Nigel completed his LLB Honours Degree through the Open University whilst in fulltime employment and thereafter completed the Bar vocational Course in 2007 at the Inns of Court School of Law. He also holds the qualification of Experto en Commercio International awarded by the University of Cadiz 2004-05. In 2009 he successfully completed a masters of Laws from City University. He previously worked for HM Customs Gibraltar as a Customs Officer from 1998 to 2007 were he acquired a broad-based experience in indirect taxes, imports and exports and international commerce. Nigel’s practice includes all direct taxes, both corporate and personal tax matters and Indirect taxes which include but are not limited to local Customs duty, exemptions, imports and export matters. He has considerable experience advising clients on direct taxes and the impact on that customs duty and customs regulations may have on any particular transaction. In all cases, reducing the exposure to tax and making sure the business complies with the relevant tax requirements. Raquel is responsible for the running of Line Trust Corporation Limited. She specialises in all aspects of trusts, from their legal drafting to their management and administration. A graduate of the University of Kent, Raquel also studied at the University of Neuchatel in Switzerland and then spent five years working in Company Management in Gibraltar. Raquel completed a post-graduate Diploma in Law at City University, London and studied for the Bar exams at the Inns of Court Law School, London. Richard is a Partner at Hassans and a member of the firm’s Corporate and Commercial team and is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Firm’s operating company. He specialises in setting up Gibraltar based businesses and operations and regularly advises Gibraltar and international High Net Worth Individuals on all aspects related to this. He enjoys a strong reputation as an approachable and hands-on lawyer who actively engages with clients and their business. His local corporate clients include the largest foreign exchange bureau, some of the largest wholesale businesses in Gibraltar and two of the country’s leading property developers. He also acts for Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar on a variety of matters including the negotiation and settlement of contracts and, for instance, advised the government on the vast contractual implications stemming from the implementation of a government wide IT system and on the setting up of the Gibraltar Business Nurturing Scheme. Sam is a Senior Associate (Barrister) in our Litigation Department, specialising in commercial litigation. He works closely with the Partners on the Litigation team and especially with Lewis Baglietto KC and Moshe Levy. He has experience in a wide range of civil and criminal matters and has appeared regularly in the Gibraltar courts since having been Called to the Bar. Sam’s busy litigation practice involves a number of areas including commercial disputes, civil fraud, judicial review, trust law, competition law, telecommunications and libel cases. Shane Danino
Shane joined Hassans in April 2024. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in November 2018 and admitted as a barrister in Gibraltar in February 2020. He maintains a busy common law practice, with instructions spanning crime, public and administrative law, personal injury, and clinical negligence. Shane has actively worked to enhance Hassans’ profile in criminal practice, having established and now leading a dedicated crime team alongside eminent figures in the field[1]. Criminal Shane predominantly practises in criminal defence, regularly appearing before all levels of domestic courts, including the Court of Appeal. He has notable experience representing both juveniles and adults charged with violent offences such as robbery, wounding, and violent disorder. He is experienced in conducting jury trials and has secured acquittals in cases involving allegations of violence, robbery, and sexual offences. Shane is frequently instructed in high-profile prosecutions. With the rise in investigations and prosecutions related to sexual offences, Shane is regularly instructed to defend cases ranging from rape and sexual assault to grooming and non-contact offences, including possession of indecent images of children. He is also privately instructed by complainants and employers in an advisory capacity across a range of offences, including sexual misconduct. Shane has experience in handling vulnerable witnesses. Mental Health Shane maintains a busy mental health law practice, representing patients appealing admissions under the Mental Health Act. He also has significant experience acting for patients detained under hospital orders. Clinical Negligence / Personal Injury Shane is regularly instructed by the local health authority in high-value claims, including those involving catastrophic injuries. He has appeared before the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal in such matters. He also handles personal injury claims arising from workplace accidents and road traffic collisions.
