Liz Grace is a partner at Matheson with a background in financial services law. Liz was appointed communications strategy director at the firm in 2016. Liz’s background in investment funds law stems from several years of practice in the area, working from early on in her career in 2000 with Matheson’s global asset management client base in the establishment, operation and re-structuring of Irish domiciled investment funds. Following on from that, she established the first dedicated knowledge management function at practice level with the Asset Management and Investment Funds team in Matheson, focussing on the law and regulation of investment funds and asset managers, in particular in relation to emerging European and Irish legal and regulatory developments affecting asset managers and investment funds. In 2012, Liz wrote the first university Funds Law syllabus in Ireland for Maynooth University. Liz’s postgraduate qualifications include a master’s degree in law from Oxford University.

Emma Doherty is a partner and a member of the US Business and Inward Investment Groups at Matheson. Emma practises corporate law and regularly spends time in the US with her clients. She works with international companies on the establishment, expansion and operation of their businesses in Ireland. Emma also advises clients on the complex legal issues that can arise on international transactions involving Irish subsidiaries of foreign companies, including advising on a broad range of corporate reorganisations. Emma regularly leads group-wide multi-jurisdictional international restructuring projects. Emma also advises corporate clients on a broad range of contract, corporate governance and business-related issues, including directors' duties and compliance matters. In addition, she provides ongoing corporate advice and strategic counselling to clients, including advice in relation to distributions and complex cash repatriation strategies. She is an experienced litigation solicitor, with expertise in defence litigation and dispute resolution, and with particular specialist expertise in employment and immigration. Emma advises both employers and employees on all aspects of the employment relationship from appointment through to termination. She regularly appears, on behalf of clients, before the Workplace Relations Commission and the Courts representing them in a range of disputes including unfair dismissal actions, discrimination claims and breach of contract actions. Emma also works closely with HR professionals and in-house management teams advising on day-to-day issues such as bullying and harassment, absenteeism, as well as restructuring and redundancies. She is an experienced public speaker and delivers seminars to clients and provides tailored training to in-house management teams in such areas as data protection, advising on the necessary steps to be taken by employers in protecting personal data collected in the course of their business. Emma is a senior associate in the Commercial Disputes and Investigations Group and the ESG Advisory Group with experience in advising in complex energy related disputes, environmental and all aspects of commercial and financial services, shareholder and regulatory disputes. Emma has extensive experience in financial services having completed a 10 month secondment with Pepper Finance Corporation (Ireland) DAC in 2020. Emma was also previously seconded to the Central Bank of Ireland for six months in 2016 working in the Regulatory Decisions Unit on a large Inquiry under the Central Bank's administrative sanctions procedure. Emma regularly advises financial institutions and receivers in high profile summary judgment proceedings (including injunctive action) in the commercial court. This includes advising in relation to distressed loans involving non-cooperative borrowers, the obtaining of freezing orders, and the enforcement of security and related court proceedings including the initiation of bankruptcy proceedings following judgment orders obtained in the commercial court and the initiation of possession proceedings to secure vacant possession of secured assets, including issuing injunction proceedings against persons unknown residing in a secured asset and taking steps for attachment and committal of borrowers/occupants following non-compliance with Court Orders. Emma regularly advises in relation to shareholder disputes requiring, in some cases, the commencement of injunctive proceedings to prevent certain actions being taken vis a vis minority shareholders. Emma also regularly advises on planning applications, including legal reviews of the application documents such as EIAR and NIS. She also advises on planning process and strategic infrastructure development procedure and gives workshops to developers on key planning issues and recent cases. Emma also has experience advising clients in relation to complex and high value commercial disputes both cross-border and domestically including multi-party, multi-jurisdictional litigation.
