What Vault is for
Vault is your private document store in LinkinLegal. Keep each client or matter in its own folder, preview files in a click, and ask Alaya about one document, a whole folder or a hand-picked set — with answers that cite the passages they rely on.
Who it's for
Lawyers running deals and disputes
Keep each matter's documents together, ask where they disagree, and send counsel a read-only copy.
In-house counsel and company secretaries
Hold policies, board packs and contracts in one place, and check what they say before a meeting.
What it solves
Documents scattered across inboxes and drives
Give every client, deal or matter its own folder. Upload whole folders with their structure intact, and find any file by name from the folder tree.
Reading a stack of documents to answer one question
Chat with a contract, a folder or a selection of files. Alaya answers with numbered citations, so you can check each point against the text.
Sending one file without opening up everything
Create a read-only link to a single file. The recipient needs no account, and the link stops working after 24 hours.
How to use Vault
Each step shows the real screen. Hover a numbered marker — or the matching note — to see what every control does.
Open Vault and find your way around
Choose Vault from your account menu at the top right, or from Features on the home page. Folders are on the left and the open folder's contents in the middle; New folder and Import sit above the list.
- The top level holds folders only — open a folder to add files.
- Right-click a folder for Chat with folder, New subfolder, Rename and Delete.
- Each folder has its own web address, so you can bookmark it.

Upload files into a folder
Open the folder you want — use New folder first if you need a subfolder — then choose Import ▸ From this device. Drop files or whole folders onto the dialog, or use Choose files or Choose folder, and click Upload.
- Documents can be up to 25 MB and images up to 10 MB.
- Older .doc, .xls and .ppt files aren't accepted — save them in the newer format first.
- System files such as .DS_Store are skipped automatically.

Tip: Files can't be renamed inside Vault, so give them the names you want before you upload.
Preview, open and download files
Click a file's name to see a quick preview and its details on the right. Open viewer shows it full-screen in LinkinLegal; Open and Download give you the original file in its original format.
- PDFs and images preview in the panel; other files show an icon.
- Open a file from one of Alaya's citations and it jumps to the cited passage.
- Hide or show the panel with the icon at the end of the toolbar.

Chat with a document
Click Chat with document in the preview panel, the file's ⋯ menu or the viewer. The chat opens in a new tab with the document on the left and Alaya on the right — ask in plain language and press Enter.
- Reopening the same file takes you back to the same conversation.
- Folder and multi-file chats work the same way, without the document panel.
- Export Chat in the ⋮ menu downloads the conversation as a Word file.

Tip: Chats open in a new tab. If nothing happens when you click, allow pop-ups for LinkinLegal in your browser.
Ask across several files or a folder
Tick the files you want — from one folder or several — and click Chat in the toolbar or Chat (3) in the panel. To ask about everything in a folder, choose Chat with folder from its menu instead.
- A selection starts a new chat every time; file and folder chats are reused.
- Find every chat later under Chats in the toolbar, where you can rename or delete it.
- Shift-, Ctrl- or ⌘-click rows to add them to the selection.

Share a read-only link
Choose Share link from a file's ⋯ menu, or from the preview panel. The link is created and copied in one step — paste it into an email or a message.
- Links are view-only and stop working after 24 hours.
- There are no password or permission settings, and a link can't be revoked.
- Each click creates a new link. Shared files never include your chats.

Tip: If your browser blocks the clipboard, a Share link ready message shows the link with a Copy button for 15 seconds.
Step 01 / 06
Everything Vault can do
The building blocks behind the walkthrough, and what each one does for you.
Chat with your documents
Ask Alaya about one file, a whole folder or a hand-picked set. Answers carry numbered citations, so you can check every point against the text.
Folders that keep their shape
Upload whole folders and their structure is kept. Pinned folders gather the laws and templates you save.
Instant preview
See a PDF or image beside the list with its size, status and upload date, or open it full-screen.
Find files by name
Search every folder and file by name, and narrow the results to folders or files.
Work in bulk
Tick files across folders to chat with, extract from, move or delete them together.
Extract key terms
Turn up to 10 selected documents into a table of the terms you choose.
Read-only share links
Send one file to anyone with a link that needs no account and expires after 24 hours.
Import from the cloud
Copy files in from Google Drive or OneDrive once you've connected them.
Tips for getting it right
Open a folder before you upload
The top level of Vault holds folders only. Open a folder first, or upload a whole folder from your computer.
Refresh to clear Processing
The badge doesn't change on its own. Click Refresh, and wait for Ready before chatting for the best answers.
Name files before you upload
Files can't be renamed in Vault, and a second file with the same name in the same folder is rejected.
Deleting is permanent
There's no trash. Deleting a folder also deletes everything inside it.
Check the count before Move or Delete
Your selection carries across folders. The N selected count in the toolbar shows everything that will be affected.
Allow pop-ups for chats
Every chat opens in a new tab. If nothing happens when you click Chat, allow pop-ups for LinkinLegal.
Statuses you'll see
Work that runs in the background always shows where it stands — here is what each label means.
- QueuedIn the upload list and waiting its turn.
- 47%Uploading. The bar fills as the file is sent.
- DoneUploaded to the folder.
- FailedNot uploaded. The reason shows in red under the file name.
- ProcessingVault is preparing the file for search and chat. Click Refresh to update the badge.
- ReadyThe file is ready to chat with. Images are ready straight away.
Your Vault is private to your account. To show someone a file, send them a share link — it's read-only and expires after 24 hours.
PDF, Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), PowerPoint (.pptx), TXT, MD and CSV documents up to 25 MB, and PNG, JPG and WebP images up to 10 MB. Older .doc, .xls and .ppt files aren't accepted.
No. Search vault matches folder and file names. To ask what documents say, chat with the file, the folder or a selection of files.
Yes. Choose Chat with folder, or tick files from any folders and click Chat. File and folder chats are reused, so you return to the same conversation; a selection starts a new chat each time.
Share link creates a view-only link to one file and copies it to your clipboard. Recipients don't need an account. Links expire after 24 hours, have no password or permission options, and can't be revoked.
Uploads stop with a message that you've reached your storage limit. The Storage bar at the bottom of the folder tree shows your usage — delete files or upgrade your plan to make room.
