What Word Add-in is for
The LinkinLegal add-in puts Alaya in a sidebar inside Microsoft Word. Ask about the open contract, apply suggested edits as tracked changes, draft new clauses to insert, check the contract against your playbook and clean up its formatting — without leaving the document.

Install LinkinLegal from AppSource
In Word, go to Home › Add-ins › More Add-ins — or Insert › Get Add-ins. Search the store for LinkinLegal and click Add. You can also install it from the Microsoft AppSource listing.
- Your LinkinLegal plan needs to include the Microsoft Word Add-in.
- Works in Word on the desktop and in Word on the web.

Open the LinkinLegal tab and sign in
Click the LinkinLegal tab on Word's ribbon, then the LinkinLegal button. The sidebar opens to the right of your document; the first time, sign in with your LinkinLegal account.
- No account yet? Sign Up opens linkinlegal.com in your browser.
- The same tab has one-click cleanup tools: Table to Text, Remove Pictures, and the Breaks, Indent and Paragraphs menus.

Pick a mode and set the jurisdiction
A new chat starts with its setup. Pick Redline when you want suggested edits, or Draft when you want new text to insert yourself. Then tell Alaya which jurisdiction applies — the country is preselected from where you are.
- The mode is fixed once you send the first message; start a new chat from the chat menu to switch.
- Further down, pick contract categories so Alaya checks wording against LinkinLegal's contract references.
- Attach PDF, Word, Excel, text or image files with the paperclip. To use Vault documents, tick them on the Dashboard tab and click Use in Chat.

Ask for edits and apply the ones you want
Select a clause, or name it, and say what you need. Alaya reads the document, then suggests each edit with a one-line reason and the exact words that change. Click Apply on the ones you want — they arrive as tracked changes.
- Accept makes a change final; Undo takes it back out. Apply all, Accept all and Undo all work on the whole card.
- Each applied edit's reason is added as a Word comment — you can turn this off in Settings › Redlines.
- Redlines change wording only, not formatting, tables, headers or list numbering.

Tip: Deleting or adding clauses? Apply those edits first, then ask Alaya to renumber and fix cross-references in a follow-up.
Draft new clauses in Draft mode
Start a chat in Draft mode and describe the clause. Alaya researches first, then writes it on a draft card you can insert where it suggests, at your cursor or at the end of the document.
- Headings, bold, italics and lists come through as Word formatting.
- Ask for alternatives and each one arrives on its own card.
- Sources are cited in the chat, never inside the draft.

Set up a playbook
A playbook holds your positions for one type of agreement. On the Playbooks tab, click New playbook and build the rules yourself — or choose From this document and Alaya drafts them from the open contract.
- Each rule has a preferred position, an optional fallback, guidance notes and exact wording to insert.
- Redline rules get suggested edits; Red Flag rules get an explanation only.
- Generated playbooks get 5 to 25 rules, depending on the document's length.
- Community lists playbooks other users shared — save a copy to make it yours.

Run a playbook review
Open a playbook, untick any rules to skip this time, and click Run review. Alaya starts a new chat, checks each selected rule and reports it as Pass, Flagged or Not found — with suggested edits for Redline rules.
- View in document jumps to the clause a finding is about.
- Red Flag rules are explained, never edited, so you decide what to do.

Clean up the formatting
The Tools tab collects formatting and cleanup tools — headings, numbering, a table of contents, cross-references, indents and spacing. Magic Format All fixes the whole document in one pass, and shows what it will change before you apply it.
- Untick any fix you don't want; the counts show how many places each one changes.
- After formatting, the wording is checked — and Revert puts the document back.
- If the document has tracked changes, the text fixes wait until you accept or reject them.

Redlines you approve
Ask for changes in plain language. Each suggestion shows its reason and the exact wording, and Apply writes it in as a tracked change you can accept or undo.
Draft and research
Draft mode writes clauses on cards you insert where Alaya suggests, at your cursor or at the end — after checking the law.

Check a contract against your positions. Build rules yourself, generate them from a document, or copy a Community playbook.

Outlook, with your approval
Turn on Outlook for a chat to search mail and calendar. Drafts and calendar changes wait on an approval card; email is never sent.
Chats kept per document
Each document keeps its own chats. Switch between them from the chat menu, edit and resend a message, or export a chat as HTML.
Tips for getting it right
Select the clause you mean
Alaya receives your current selection with each message. The strip above the message box shows it; × clears it.
Widen the sidebar
If the tabs are cut off, drag the sidebar's edge to widen it, or scroll the tab row sideways.
Restructure first, renumber second
When edits delete or insert clauses, apply them, then ask Alaya to renumber and update cross-references in a follow-up.
Clear old revisions in Word on the web
Word on the web can't add a new redline to a paragraph that already has tracked changes. Accept or reject those first.
Apply the newest suggestion
When Alaya revises an edit, the older one is marked as superseded — apply the newer card instead.
Choose how much ends up in the file
Applied edits add their reason as a Word comment. Turn off Explain each change with a comment in Settings › Redlines to skip them.
Statuses you'll see
Work that runs in the background always shows where it stands — here is what each label means.
- AppliedThe edit is in your document as a tracked change. Accept makes it final; Undo removes it.
- AcceptedThe tracked change was accepted and is now ordinary text.
- DismissedYou set the suggestion aside. The document is unchanged.
- Out of dateThe paragraph changed after Alaya suggested the edit. Ask Alaya to refresh it.
- PassThe contract meets the rule's preferred or fallback position.
- FlaggedThe rule isn't met. Redline rules come with a suggested edit; Red Flag rules with an explanation.
- Not foundThe contract has no language this rule applies to.
- Generating rulesAlaya is writing a new playbook's rules from your document. If it fails, click Retry.

No. Alaya can read the document and suggest edits, but nothing changes until you click Apply — and applied edits arrive as tracked changes you can still undo. In Draft mode, you insert the text yourself.

Email drafts and calendar changes wait for you to click Approve, and drafts are saved to your Outlook Drafts; nothing is sent.
Yes. In Settings, turn on Use my own API key and choose the provider, model and key. The key is saved only in this browser and sent only to the provider you choose.
AI chat in the Word Add-in is unlimited on every subscription plan, under a fair-use threshold set far above normal professional use. Day and Week passes include a fixed number of AI credits.
